I am an Artists who has made my living for over 40 years from my Art. I have also had a Gallery.
The relationship between Artists and Gallery owners has always been strained at best, throughout modern history. The Artists providing his or her talent for the gallery owner to make a living off of that talent....for a commission. The Gallery owner has all the expenses of operation of the gallery while the Artist only sees 40% to 60% of his or her sales disappearing every time their Art is sold.

What the Gallery Owner fails to tell us;
All Commercial resale businesses have the expenses of overhead. The lighting bill, heating bill, rent or property payments, employees, etc., etc., etc.
But Art Galleries are one of the ONLY commercial businesses selling merchandise....where all of the merchandise (in this case Art), is Fronted to them without ANY COST OR ANY RISK!!! I haven't seen an Art Gallery actually PAY up front for the Art in their Galleries for years. Oh, their may be a few...but I haven't seen any. The Gallery takes little or no risk for having the Art in their Gallery. It is given to them on consignment, the Artist taking all of the risk for damage, theft, or any other loss.

Another point I would like to make with all those would be gallery Artists out there. As these galleries close, Remember there are always Nightmare stories of Artists losing their Art to bankrupt proceedings and property rental settlements, or disappearing in the night. I'm not meaning to cast negative shadows on all galleries but it pays to beware!
A point that is often not mentioned about dealing with Galleries. It is just my opinion but my mailing list of all the patrons that have purchased my Art over all the years is worth a fortune to me.
That list of previous patrons is my retirement as an Artist. When you sell through Galleries throughout your career you never get to know or have the address of all those patrons who are buying your art and supporting you as an Artist. The galleries have those names and addresses and they will not share them with you for fear that you will cut them out of future sales and sell directly to the patron.

So on the one hand, know what you are getting into if you are trying to put your Art on consignment in a gallery, coffee shop, or anywhere else that you are not representing yourself.
Sorry to see so many galleries going out of business....only because it decreases venues for Artists to sell their Art. If Galleries are not doing well it is a reflection of the fact that Artists are not doing well either....because Galleries make their living off of the talents of Artists.

As for Gallery Owners. Life is tough. Open a 7-11 or a Burger King. I'm not crying for you. Heck, you couldn't make a go of the Gallery Business...even when all of your inventory was fronted to you for FREE. You are making a gross profit of from 40% to 60% of each work of art you sell. So you can't stay in business? All your neighboring commercial sales stores who have got to purchase their inventory up front are struggling too, but surviving.

These are Not "Promoted Festivals" in the sense the we collect any money and promote the shows! We are fellow Artists not promoters. We open these opportunities for all Artists but it is up to the Artists to turn THEIR SHOWS into a Great event. It may take time, it might happen next week.

Our Free Community Art Shows are a new way of doing things. Our Free Community Fine Art Shows are based upon recent rulings by the Federal Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, having jurisdiction over Arizona, which upheld the First Amendment Constitutional Rights of original fine Artists to be able to perform, display, and sell their self created fine art on traditional public forums such as parks, sidewalks, and plazas in a peaceful manner. For the very first time in over two decades we have the Cities of Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa and Apache Junction complying with Federal Laws and Constitutional protections offered to the Arts. We have worked long and hard with these City Government Officials to start a program of educating the public and the Artists about the rules and guidelines for Art and Artists to be a permanent part of the recreational experience of our public parks. We are creating a positive example of
Free Grass Roots venues where all Artistic Citizens have a place to express themselves artistically and share their talents with the community.

It is our belief that one reason why there is such a great amount of public financial support for sports activities in our communities can be traced directly back to all the sports venues we have in our public parks. Venues that facilitate participation in and interaction with Sports at all ages and all skill levels. Over the past 25 years billions of tax payers dollars have been spent on building and maintaining sports venues in the public parks.

In that same period of time City Governments throughout the land placed original Artists of all ages and skill levels under the regulatory restrictions of their Commercial Business codes, licenses and fees. It is pretty well known that commercial vendors are not allowed in public parks! As Artists were labeled as "commercial vendors" they were rousted and run out of all public parks.

We have witnessed the decline in public financial support for all Art programs in the schools, for generations of our children, as there is no longer a place in the public parks for Community involvement in and participation with the Art and Artists on a grass roots level. A place where everyone can play / participate on an equal basis in the Arts in the parks. This is exactly what has happened to the Arts in our society over the past 25 years, in Cities and Towns across America. As more and more venues were lost to Artists for getting their work before the public then more and more festivals popped up to fill the need and entry fees climbed higher and higher.

It has taken Federal Litigation going all the way to the Supreme Court to reverse this travesty that has almost destroyed the Arts in America and public financial support for Art for our Children's Schools. I might add at a time when the Arts are most needed in our society and our children's lives as a positive alternative to guns, drugs, and violence.

Now we are slowly opening opportunities for reversing these horrible destructive governmental policies. By working with these Cities to establish the rules for having Artists in the Parks, without turning the parks into Commercial Flea Markets...we are establishing new sales opportunities for Artists all over the Country. We are opening opportunities for our Senior Citizens, many on fixed incomes, to go to our public parks and participate in Free Art Shows to earn some extra money. We are creating opportunities for our young and beginning Artists to share their Art, many for the first time, and make a little extra money to continue with their Art career. I often wonder where these large festival promoters think they will get the next generation of Artists to participate in their events if they keep trying to destroy grass roots opportunities for new Artists to reach the public with their Art.

What every Artist should understand is that I, nor my associate, are promoters in the sense that we pay for advertising and such. We are just fellow Artists who have made our living as Artist for over 40 years and we are giving back to the Art Community by standing up for all Artistic Citizens Constitutional Right to be Artists and we are working with City Governments to open FREE venues for all Artists to perform, display, and receive compensation for your Artistic Self Expression on any day you wish and with a multitude of parks and public fora to choose from.

These are not my shows.....these are YOUR Shows, Artists Shows, put on by us Artists for us Artists. We all must take responsibility for spreading the word and making phone calls to news media to advertise OUR shows. These are Free Shows...there is now money here to spend on promotion and advertising. What we do to start with is try to pick high traffic parks to have our shows in, parks with high visibility as well. We look for parks where Artists have easy loading and unloading access with plenty of room for patron parking. We look for parks that will be beneficial to everyone and then we make arrangements with the City Officials to have our shows.

Our shows are Grass Roots come sit in the park with other Artists and enjoy your day kind of shows. You can come when you want to and leave when you want to. The shows are open to Artists of all ages and all skill levels. So you might find yourself set up next to an old fogy like me with 40 years of making my living as an Artists or you might find yourself set up next to a new beginning Artist who is bringing their first and Only painting down to show it. I love these shows because it really brings out some GREAT talent they you have just never seen before at the pay for festivals.

We do NOT use Canopy tents for a couple of reasons. First is that most City Officials only have one example, visual image, in their minds when it comes to us telling them we want to hold a Free Community Art Show in their parks. They think we will turn the public parks into a "sea of canopy tents" looking like another festival every day in the parks with all the damage done to their lawns and the room taken up on pathways. I think we can all understand their concern! I must agree with them. So these City Governments have said that if someone wants to put up a canopy tent they must have a one million dollar liability insurance policy for setting up an "apparatus" in the parks. They require such insurance of promoters and festival sponsors using canopy tents in their events so they could fairly apply that to us Artists. But personally I think it is a good thing, not allowing canopy tents, because we have found that it levels the playing field between professional festival Artists who have elaborate displays and the youngster with a card table and his or her first work of art on display. The public likes this format for our shows as well because they quickly realize that these are grass roots shows and want to support the new upcoming artists and their talents. It may be a Grandmother with incredible paintings that only her family has ever seen....or a young photographer who has just spent his or her last nickle getting their photos framed to bring to their very first show in the park.

Our shows have a great relaxed feeling of Artists enjoying being Free Artists and visiting with each other without the heavy competitive air you find in the expensive festival events where everyone is trying to earn back their entry fees before they can begin to make any profits. We don't even define spaces! We usually have plenty of grass to go around so everyone sets up where they want to, giving others their space as well. It makes for a very open and relaxed climate for the public to wander around visiting with the Artists.

Now you at least have a choice between spending money to do the countless promoted and sponsored Art Shows held all over Arizona ....OR....you can come down and participate on any Saturday with other Artists in a FREE Community Art Show held in numerous parks in major Cities of Arizona. And by doing so you will also open the doors of opportunity for you to be able to go to any of the public parks in Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, and Apache Junction to set up a display and sell your Art on any day of the week without a license, permit, or fee. OR create your own Fine Art Shows with friends in the parks....we will help you do that too. Free!

So there you have it Art Community! Join us....or don't! But it is a pretty sad state of affairs when people, especially fellow Artists, bad mouth our Free Community Art Shows when they know and understand so little about them. Even the countless show promoters should understand that we are creating the Artists that will one day have the money and skill to participate in their expensive festivals. Free Community Fine Art Shows are simply an alternative...for free! The other factor is that as our shows grow and become commonplace in the parks it is bound to make promoters and sponsors of these festival events become more responsive and respectful of Artists needs...especially when setting entry fees.

The purpose of our Holiday Arts Boutique is to provide a warm and inviting atmosphere while our community is able to purchase quality gifts for the coming holiday season. All proceeds go to Open Door Fellowship Women's Ministries.
Come enjoy a holiday shopping experience with crafters from around the valley. This is an opportunity for those at ODF and beyond to share their talents at the perfect holiday shopping season.
Whether you are interested in children's clothing, hand-made jewelry, quilted bags or a chair massage then you will love this unique shopping opportunity with new and one-of-a-kind hand-made items.
Concessions will be available through the annual Women’s Ministry Bake Sale which will be taking place during the boutique! Come to get your holiday baked goods.
An amazing soup and bread bar will be in place with several soups available for purchase to eat at the fair and some to take home!

For Crafters-

Registration cost is $25 for our regular Open Door Fellowship attendees. For all other crafters registration is $30.
For the registration fee you will receive:
•An 8 foot table within a parking space
•2 chairs
•Publicity! The craft fair will be posted on Craigslist and Facebook as well as flyers throughout the community!

Crafters will keep all of their proceeds. You will be in charge of decorating your own station and tagging and pricing all of your items prior to the boutique.

The Holiday Arts Boutique is NOT a rummage sale or flea market. Used items will not be sold.

Looking for artists who create vivid works of art. Something that appeals to the music metal scene. I'd like to make shirts that appeal to the young metal crowd and possibly even do shirts for bands. An example of something I'm thinking of would be Drop Dead clothing. Google it.

I'm in school now, so not a lot of time to dedicate to this, but just enough. Love for some dedicated people. Haven't got a name yet, just a drawing from myself.

ALSO need someone who is good with drawing on a computer; ex: someone who can transform a hand drawn idea into a computer graphic, add color, things like that.

So I am not going to give you a big explination about my equipment and my inks and all the unnecessary details you can and feel free to ask any questions along the way.I take pride in being very clean and sterile plus it is a health risk you don't take lightly.
I think that being creative is very important, Especially when you want to stand out and have a design that is unique. I have a different approach to the art of tattooing. I strongly believe that getting a tattoo should be a pleasurable experience. Not going into some shop where you are greeted by an attitude, then the artist there cannot draw your idea to show you he has the skills to tattoo it. loud hate music, very uncomfortable. terrible conversation, ALL of which leads to a bad tattoo experience. I have a large variety of clients from around the state that wont go to anyone else because they had a great tattoo experience and walked out of the shop completely satisfied. I take that extra step to make sure that my clients leave with a great tattoo and had a good time getting it.
Do you want people say to you "WOW, nice tat, let me see that again" then seek out one of the best artist in AZ.

The Fair will be held on February 20, 2010, from 9am to 4pm, at the Potato Barn located on Williams Field between Higley and Recker. The registration fee is $35 for a 10x10 space, and there are over 60 spaces available.
