What is life in Phoenix like? (Phoenix)

I am a gay woman in my late 30s and am considering a move to the Phoenix area from the Southeast. I would like to know what living in Phoenix is really like as I have visited the area a couple of times just briefly. What is the real estate market like? Weather? Politics? Is there a gay community of any kind? What is the general mindset of people that live in the area? What are the outdoor activities? How high or low is the cost of living in AZ?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
