The Gemeinhardt story is initiated with Kurt Gemeinhardt, a fourth-generation flute maker from Markneukirchen, Germany. After being apprenticed by his father and subsequently crafting handmade flutes in Switzerland for world-renowned musicians, an invitation was extended to Kurt in 1928 to build instruments in Elkhart, Indiana. In 1948, The Gemeinhardt Company was founded, where every instrument has since been associated with his name.
What began as a vision for a small line of professional all-silver flutes was quickly expanded due to growing demand, leading to the establishment of a larger factory in 1951 and an expanded range that now includes intermediate and student models. In 1997, the Roy Seaman Piccolo Company, recognized for its handcrafted grenadilla wood piccolos, was acquired by Gemeinhardt.
Today, Gemeinhardt is recognized as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of flutes and piccolos, with instruments produced for players of all levels. While modern technology is employed to ensure precision and consistency, each instrument is still hand-fitted and regulated by skilled artisans. Gemeinhardt instruments are manufactured globally, with key components produced in the U.S., Taiwan, and China, and final assembly completed to exacting standards. The tradition of fine flute making is preserved by Gemeinhardt artisans, who take pride in continuing a four-generation legacy with every instrument that bears their name.
