Made in Mexico, this is a neat historical piece. Most likely VIETNAM era. Engraved on the bottom of the inside of the bowl "OFFICERS AND WIVES 4TH TRANS. TERMINAL C” This well made (fruit bowl?) was handmade in Mexico. Brass has great repoussé work and is marked on the inside of the footed base “HECHO EN MEXICO” (Made in Mexico) but I can’t tell what the symbol in the center of the mark is.
Engraved Brass, it's HUGE and heavy. See photo of it sitting on the trunk of my car for size reference.
Time for someone else to research it more and cherish it. Here’s what I found on it:
The "4th Transportation Command (Terminal C)" refers to a historical unit of the United States Army. It was a key component of military logistics, particularly during the Vietnam War. Its primary mission was the operation of port facilities and the movement of cargo and personnel, particularly in supporting military operations in Vietnam. This included managing sub-terminals in various locations within the Delta area of IV CTZ (Corps Tactical Zone). The command had elements assigned to locations such as Can Tho, Vinh Long, and Dong Tarn, with the U.S. Army Transportation Battalion Vung Tau/Delta (Provisional) located at Vung Tau.
The command faced significant challenges related to unreliable communication and the need for frequent transportation of liaison and supervisory personnel between its headquarters and subordinate units, particularly in the geographically dispersed Delta region. The unit has a long history of activations and inactivations, including service in World War II, Vietnam, and Germany. It was redesignated multiple times, including as the 4th Port of Embarkation, 4th Port Headquarters, 4th Transportation Terminal Command, and 4th Transportation Brigade, before its final inactivation in 1989.
I bought this probably over 20 years ago at an Antique shop. I thought it was cool, and had fruit in it for years on my kitchen center island. After we moved, it was relegated to the garage, and I had forgotten about it. I did clean the inside quickly and was surprised how fast the brass tarnish removed. I didn’t put much work into it, so know if you wanted the whole thing bright and shiny it could be so easily (Barkeeper’s Friend is great on old brass and doesn’t scratch).
$65 Cash only. No big bills (20s or less) and correct change only.
