A recent quest to find a faster, YET RELIABLE mountain bike tire combination for a high geared, technical short travel bike on South Mountain yielded some interesting testing results, and some new favorites. The objective was something that could take an aggressive climb-descend line by a heavy rider on sharp rocks, and still have a low wattage pedal requirement at high XC speeds. The Wicked Will is a brand new entry into the downcountry bike scene and my opinion is favorable for this ramped short nobby. I use the heavier trail casing (Wicked Will) on the back and the lighter ground casing (Nobby Nic) front.
By the way, this is not your dads Nobby Nic. It has been redesigned twice in the last 15 years, and is now a very capable FRONT tire, where it used to better serve rear duties with something more aggressive up front. I am using the WW speedgrip compound rear, and the NN front. Of note the WW unexpectedly outshined Schwalbes semi slick Rock Razor. The Wicked Will resists penetration better, is a better technical climber, and surprisingly faster rolling due to its rounder profile. It doesnt corner better but hey, its in the back where lower rolling resistance is always welcome.
OTHER COMBINATIONS
The NN can be used front and rear for a bit more grip in the back.
The WW can be used front and rear for a bit less rolling resistance, just repect its turning limitations.
