This is an original Leekya Deyuse (Zuni Indian) Necklace (1889-1966)and Earrings, made in 1928. It is one of the first necklaces that he sold, due to the various sizes of animals and variety of animals. They vary from 3" to 2.5", to 1.5" in length. It's made of abalone and various other shells. There are bear, duck, wolf, mink, squirrel, mountain lion, crow, and other birds in this beauty. All animals have inlaid eyes, and the necklace is 26" long.
Included with the necklace and earrings is a photo of Sarah (Leekya's daughter) wearing it, and handwritten notes from Sarah, who was living in Zuni NM in the 1990's. Sarah has since passed away, also.
This necklace was purchased at Lee's Indian Store in 1964, on Indian School Rd in Phoenix. It has been owned by one owner, Pete and Willie Burgeson.
