This spectacular and rare print comes from the estate of my father, who was a huge fan of LeRoy Neiman, jazz, and Louis Armstrong. This print was produced in 1976 in very limited quantities. There were 300 "regular" numbered prints, 30 artist proofs, and 6 publishers proofs. This is one of the 30 artist proofs that were produced. Artists and publishers proofs were the very first ones that were printed. In that era, that made a significant difference in the quality of the prints. Back in that era, since the prints were printed one at a time using silk screens, the first prints were usually sharper and bolder in appearance. Also, artist proofs, since they are produced in much smaller numbers than the numbered prints (10% of the numbered prints in this case), they are valued at 25-50% higher. Currently, there is only one original print for sale on eBay. It is a numbered print (300 produced) and it is listed at $8000.00. When I did an internet search, the last original print that I found that had sold at auction, was a numbered print that was sold by Scottsdale Art Exchange on December 4, 2021 for $7000.00 + commission fees. The publisher, Knoedler Publishing, and the printer, Styria Studio, destroyed the screens and plates after the one and only time that the prints were produced, so no "posthumous" prints exist.
This print is in excellent overall condition. The print has no obvious defects. There is some toning to the paper stock that is the border around the actual print. The frame shows some light normal wear that includes a few superficial scuffs and scratches. Please refer to the photos.
This print is unconditionally guaranteed to be genuine in all respects. The size of the print is 26" x 38". The size of the frame is 34" x 45.5". The print comes matted with a gilt metal frame. The frame has plexiglass, instead of regular glass.
There is no doubt that this print is very attractively priced, especially considering the fact that it is an artist proof. This is one of LeRoy Neiman's most iconic and sought after early works. And the subject matter, Louis Armstrong, is one of jazz's all-time greats. This magnificent print will make for a wonderful Holiday gift and for a family heirloom for future generations to come.
