1964 Learning Tool: General Electric Show 'n Tell Phono Viewer
Today, a basic phone is a powerful learning tool for any kid... but only 60 years ago, this General Electric learning tool was top of the line...
The way this worked: You were buying a media package to learn a specific topic, consisting in a record and a few slides. The record was detailing the topic and the slides were visualizing key aspects of the topic by projecting on a screen that looked like a TV. Very ingenious. The TV/record player was $29.99 at the time (that is in 1960's money -very expensive). Plus you had to buy the media packages...
Offered here is the TV/record player set, manufactured on Nov.4, 1964, ten media packages with the original sleeves, plus four records from four other media packages (without sleeves). All for only $50. The record player can be used to play any records, and it has selectable speed of 16, 33 45, and 78!
The set is in very good, clean, and complete condition, however, it needs refurbishing. I opened it, and this is what it needs:
- the belt from the motor to the record platter. A picture shows the current broken belt. I will provide it, for you to get a matching size.
- probably the cartridge. A picture shows the cartridge, but probably is damaged during the long storage.
- the rest should be fine, I do not see any other damage, but nothing is tested. The wiring looks good, the mirror and the projection optics look good, the audio amplifier and the speaker looks good, all switches and controls move as they should... Pictures are attached.
