Phoenix Testing & Inspection LLC (PTI) is a Phoenix-based geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, and special inspections firm serving Arizona since 2001. PTI provides geotechnical investigations, foundation recommendations, pavement evaluations, post-grading certifications, and field/laboratory testing services for residential, commercial, industrial, and land development projects throughout the Valley.
We are seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with a strong background in geotechnical investigations and report preparation to support continued growth. This role may be performed remotely (Arizona-based preferred) or on-site at our Phoenix/Tempe office.
Position Summary
-The Senior Geotechnical Engineer will lead and manage subsurface investigations, engineering analyses, and geotechnical report production. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in Arizona soil conditions, expansive soils, collapsible soils, pavement design, and foundation recommendations for residential and commercial developments.
This position includes technical leadership, client interaction, project oversight, and mentoring of junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
-Plan and oversee subsurface investigations (borings, test pits, sampling programs)
-Review and interpret field and laboratory data
-Perform geotechnical engineering analyses (settlement, bearing capacity, slope stability, pavement design, etc.)
-Prepare clear, defensible geotechnical engineering reports and recommendations
-Provide foundation and slab-on-grade recommendations for residential and commercial structures
-Develop grading, site preparation, and over-excavation recommendations
-Perform site visits and provide construction-phase consultation as needed
-Review post-grading reports and compaction documentation
-Coordinate with project managers, clients, contractors, and municipal reviewers
-Mentor EITs and junior engineers
-Assist with proposal preparation and scope development
Required Qualifications
-Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Master’s preferred)
-Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Arizona (required)
-5+ years of geotechnical engineering experience
-Strong experience in Arizona geologic and soil conditions
-Proven experience preparing comprehensive geotechnical investigation reports
-Proficiency in settlement analysis, shallow foundation design, and pavement design
-Strong technical writing and communication skills
-Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Preferred Experience
-Experience with residential subdivisions and large-scale land development
-Familiarity with Maricopa and Pinal County municipal requirements
-Experience reviewing grading plans and foundation plans
-Background in forensic geotechnical evaluations (a plus)
-Experience working with materials testing laboratories
Remote Option
Remote candidates must:
-Be licensed in Arizona
-Be available for periodic site visits as required
-Be responsive during standard Arizona business hours
-Maintain strong communication with PTI’s field and laboratory teams
