For sale is a Yamaha PX-3 linear tracking turntable with direct drive. It is in great condition – both functionally and cosmetically. An Ortofon FF15XE MkII cartridge with elliptical diamond stylus is included, mounted in the original Yamaha headshell. This comes from the estate of a high-end equipment collector.
Why Linear Tracking? The linear tracking tonearm of the PX-3 glides along a track as the record plays, always maintaining the cartridge perpendicular to the record grooves. This eliminates the geometric tracking-angle distortion (up to 1% THD) that is unavoidable with ordinary pivoting tone-arms.
The critical tonearm transport mechanism on this unit has been carefully cleaned and serviced (NOT OILED), and is in very good, reliable operating condition. The direct drive spindle motor keeps RPM spot on either 33 or 45 RPM, as indicated by the quartz PLL “Lock” indicator. The full size 12” aluminum turntable itself (with mat) weights a hefty 3.8 lb., keeping wow and flutter at inaudible levels.
Pushbutton controls alleviate the need to touch the sensitive tonearm. Pressing the “30” (cm) button will begin play of a 12” LP; the “17” (cm) button initiates play of a 7” single. At the conclusion of play, the tonearm automatically returns to standby position. Manual cueing can be accomplished via UP and DOWN controls, with two tonearm travel speeds available in either direction. The “CUT” button terminates play and returns the tonearm to standby.
Cosmetically, the base of the unit (made of a very dense composite material) has a few minor dings. The dustcover is in exceptional condition, and has no cracks. Connections to your phono preamp are via stout NEGLEX 2496 low impedance cables. The complete turntable is quite heavy, weighing in at about 27 lb. Four new freestanding air-cushioned vibration isolators are included in place of the original feet.
Cash only. Questions welcome (voice preferred).
