Carl D. Clapp, Farmer / Artist “Cotton Flower” Original Painting
This piece was painted by noted farmer / artist Carl D. Clapp (1940-2021) of Casa Grande, Arizona. It is one of a series of cotton paintings that Carl did, showcasing the development of a cotton boll, from blossom to fully open and ready to pick. Note the incredible detail that Carl shows in both the blossom and the leaves. Carl told my father that he worked many hours using high magnification to help him capture these fine details. “Cotton Flower” was donated to the CALCOT-Seitz Foundation by Carl to be sold at auction to raise funds for the Foundation to provide scholarships and grants to students from California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas who are studying agriculture. My parents, also cotton farmers and CALCOT members, ended up winning the auction for this painting and it has hung in their house ever since. It is now time for this spectacular piece of ag art to find a new home, so we are offering it for sale.
The painting is acrylic on masonite board. It is signed in the lower left corner with his name and also his family brand. It is approximately 24” x 37”, and the overall size in the frame is approximately 44” x 34”. There is one small dent in the frame, as pictured.
This painting was featured on the cover of the CALCOT Winter 1981 magazine as well as the cover of the Arizona Farmer-Ranchman magazine. Copies of the CALCOT magazine will also be included with the painting. It has also been featured in several other magazines and articles, and some of these will also be included, as will the information board that was with the painting and some other miscellaneous documents.
Of note, the black and white picture was taken the night of the auction where it was purchased. On the left, is Carl D. Clapp, the artist, Norman L. Knox and Barbara G. Knox, of Chandler, Arizona, and the Emcee for the evening, Rex Allen, Jr. A copy of this picture will also be included.
