These cost me $62.00 to make - and I'm selling at loss for $25.00. I just want to sell my art! I am a history buff, plain and simple. I love learning about where we've been, I love exploring old buildings, I love connecting to the past. I believe that exploring and celebrating our past helps ground us and give us a stronger connection to the world we live in. A few years ago, I heard about "The Steinegger Hotel" - the oldest hotel in Phoenix that was being torn down. I decided to sneak into the demo site and "liberate" some material in order to create an homage to this memorable Phoenix place. To celebrate the "death" of this building, I am celebrating the "birth" of myself as an artist. I have created a series of 25 metal prints with different color profiles and effects. Each print is set in a channel cut in an original brick from the building. All my prints are printed at a local print shop (ArtisanHD.com).
The accompanying photo was taken by me on July 12th, 2020- the day I visited the site and collected the bricks. The demolition from the back side had already begun, but the front half of the building was still standing. This is photo is 1#8 of 25. As I was playing around with these color combinations, I landed on black as I imagined this alley at night. As I tweaked the shadows and saw the highlights - the photo actually reminded me the movie "Dark City" with Kiefer Sutherland. But by the time I finished it and looked at it, all I could see was "BACK IN BLACK" which reminded me of AC/DC.
I have many different variations of this print available - all are created by me along with the salvaged bricks from the hotel. Visit https://www.mediamuseum.info/steinegger-hotel to see them all.
