For changing wheels on a range of vehicles as they add extra length to often short lug bolts making it easier to line up and mount wheels. Additionally they helps prevent painful back strain caused from trying to hold a heavy wheel and tire in place while fumbling to get a lug nut started to take away the load. The female ended design acts a short shroud that covers more of the lug bolt to protect the threads and prevent them being damaged while maneuvering the wheel and tightening lug nuts
