I’ve rented rooms on CL for many years. My goal was to help people in need and maybe to make a new friend or two along the way. Sadly however, the instability here in the PHX Valley has resulted in a number of highly toxic situations unfolding after we extended trust to the wrong people. My wife works in Behavioral Health & doesn’t want to come home to the same kind of drama she deals with at the Hospital. She doesn’t want us to extend ourselves in the same way we use to. This makes me sad on some levels, but I can’t justify putting the well being of others before the well being of my own family, obviously.
I use to let people stay here and allowed them to trade their skill sets or professional talents in exchange for the cost of rent. I just wanted to help people in need. Once when I was younger, I ended up homeless for a while and wished someone gave a damn. Now that I am able to be that blessing for others I wanted too.
So what’s my point? The Golden Rule Matters! When people choose to violate the personal boundaries of one another it destroys trust in our society and comes at the expense of the world we could otherwise be creating.
Maybe I can persuade my wife to soften her heart at some point… but we all need to be reminded that TRUST is the foundation of every kind of relationship in life. Don’t make choices to damage trust if another person is willing to extend trust to you. 🙏
